Golf Course Master Planning and Ecological Restoration

This multi-phase project involves master planning of golf course improvements and design/permitting of ecological restoration components of the master plan.  The primary restoration was of Academy Brook, a small perennial stream and pond system which flows through the course and is part of the Rosemary Brook watershed, the Town of Wellesley's water supply.  The stream had experienced significant erosion and bank cutting due to upstream watershed changes.  Mr. Toohill evaluated the causes of the problems and developed a series of stream bank and pond restoration designs intended to address the issues of increased stream flow and conveyance.  The design also included creation of riparian wetland systems and integration of the ecological restoration projects as design elements of the golf course.

Mr. Toohill also conducted the ecological investigation of a proposed renovation to the irrigation pond and drainage improvements to three golf holes at this private course.  He prepared environmental permits for the replacement of the 12th green and reconfiguration of the 12th fairway, 11th tees, 10th greenside bunkers, primary and secondary rough areas between the holes, and the renovation and dredging of the irrigation pond located between these golf course features.  Aerators were added to the pond for water quality control and aesthetic considerations.
