Natural Gas Plant Upgrade

Prior to construction activities, Coneco conducted pre-characterization of a natural gas regulator facility located in Arlington, Massachusetts to determine if any environmental concerns were present at the Site.  Pre-characterization activities included sampling the building materials of Site buildings for the presence of asbestos, lead, and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), coordinating a Ground Penetrating Radar study of the facility to identify any unknown underground structures, and installing soil borings throughout the facility to determine the extent of MGP contamination in subsurface soil.

Coneco has provided Licensed Site Professional (LSP) oversight during the URAM activities at the Site.  The location of the facility is historically a MGP site and the associated contamination, including coal ash, petroleum, arsenic, lead, and chromium, remains confined to soil beneath the paved surfaces of the regulator station.

Coneco provided oversight and directed excavation activities to minimize mobilization of these contaminates by wind, storm water, or equipment tracking during the underground line and equipment upgrades intended to better natural gas service for the area communities.  Air monitoring was performed to evaluate the safety of workers as well as area residents and visiting pedestrians during all excavation and soil mobilization activities.  All encountered contaminated soil was shipped offsite daily to a proper disposal and recycling facility.  At the conclusion of construction activities, clean soil was placed in excavations and capped with either asphalt or traprock to once again confine contaminates and limit exposure to the public and the environment.

Project Details

  • A natural gas regulator facility, located in a historically contaminated Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP) and chrome-plating facility, upgraded underground lines and equipment.

  • Coneco performed a pre-characterization study of the facility to determine the extent of environmental concerns.

  • Utility Related Abatement Measure (URAM) activities undertaken by Coneco to address the environmental impacts of contaminated soil disturbed by the construction and excavation activities required for the upgrade.
